Belarus’s largest bank traces its history to 26 December 1922, and for its 90th anniversary the National Bank issued this commemorative ruble on 14 May 2012. The hero of the coin is neither an event nor a person, but a financial institution.
The reverse shows the office building of JSC «ASB Belarusbank», with the bank’s logo and an anniversary mark above it and the circular legend «90 HADOU BELARUSBANK». The obverse is restrained: the state coat of arms in relief, the year and the denomination.
The bank’s path mirrors the country’s history: it grew out of the system of state labour savings banks, became the Belarusian Republican Bank in 1987 and the Belarusian Savings Bank in 1991, and took its present form as a joint-stock company in 1995. Today it has the largest branch network in the republic.
The coin belongs to the «Belarus and the World Community» series. Its mintage is 4,000 pieces, struck by the Lithuanian Mint. In a banking and finance collection, or a run of Belarusian commemorative rubles, it documents the country’s main savings institution.
Proof-like quality: a near-mirror field on which the architectural drawing of the building reads clearly. This is how collector issues are made; it is not a grade of wear.
Collectors who focus on a single country will find its other issues in the VPcoins catalogue as well.
