Only 3,000 pieces were struck of this silver 5 pounds of 1991, KM#804, which honours Cairo University's engineering faculty on its 175th jubilee. By comparison, the coin for the opening of the Cairo Opera House in 1988 had a mintage ten times larger.
The anniversary span is spelled out on the coin itself, with the years 1816 and 1991 set beside the names of the faculty and the university. The central image links two ages of engineering: a pyramid of Egypt ringed by two stylised orbits, as in a drawing of an atom.
The piece suits a topical collection on education and science, as well as a run of Egyptian commemoratives in which the faculty's jubilee sits alongside those of ministries and companies. In VF the tallest parts of the design are worn, but the pyramid, its orbits and the lettering are easy to make out.
