The inscription «EMISSAO MONETARIA DA GUINE-BISSAU» and the value «6000 CFA» make this 2004 bimetallic piece look like money, but the Numista catalogue classes it as a fantasy issue: behind it stands neither a state nor the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO), which has issued the CFA franc for Guinea-Bissau since 1997.
One side shows an elephant’s head against a map of West Africa with «4 AFRICA», and on the ring «EMISSION MONETAIRE DE L’INSTITUT DE DEVELOPPEMENT DE L’AFRIQUE DE L’OUEST IDAO». The other shows a graceful hoofed animal, with «AFRICA OESTE» and «6000 CFA 2004» on the ring. French and Portuguese legends side by side are typical of the private series the token belongs to.
It is a souvenir medal for a topical collection of African wildlife or a group of fantasy issues. AU-UNC: practically no signs of circulation, at most light rubbing on the high points of the relief.
The VPcoins catalogue brings together coins, banknotes, medals and other numismatic items from around the world.
