Four coins, four Zambian creatures from a tiny bird to an elephant: this 2012 set brings together the entire coin range of the new kwacha, which replaced the old one on 1 January 2013 at a rate of one to a thousand.
It contains the 5 ngwee with the Zambezi indigobird, the 10 ngwee with the eland, the 50 ngwee with the head of an African elephant and the 1 kwacha with Chaplin’s barbet, a bird found only in Zambia. All four share a common obverse: the national arms, the country name and the date.
The new kwacha had no other coins — banknotes started at 2 kwacha — so these four values cover the whole coin range the country used for more than a decade. In 2025 it was succeeded by the Heritage Series, turning the 2012 coins into a closed chapter.
UNC grade: the coins never circulated, show no wear and keep their mint lustre. A single-year set with every denomination completes the 2013 redenomination in a Zambia collection and adds four subjects to an African wildlife theme.
At VPcoins you can build a coin collection around a favourite theme, from animals to great historical figures.
