A commemorative coin in bimetal — gold and silver — struck to uncirculated quality. It is devoted to one of the most significant centres of ancient material and spiritual culture of the northern and north-western Black Sea region, the city-state of Olbia, founded at the beginning of the sixth century BC in the lower Boh valley, now a site near the village of Parutyne in Mykolaiv Oblast, which lasted about a thousand years. The city had a coinage of its own, issuing cast copper dolphins and arrowheads as money.
The obverse has a combined bimetallic surface: a golden inner circle and a silver outer ring. At the centre of the inner circle, against ears of rye, is the symbolic wheel of history with a falcon perched above it that turns into a trident; below the wheel is a serpent as the symbol of wisdom, and above the inner circle, on the left, is the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine. On the outer ring are a potter at work and a woman with children against a Greek column, and beneath this composition the mark of the Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine. Along the upper rim runs the semicircular legend УКРАЇНА, and beneath it the year of minting, 2000. On the lower part of the outer ring is the two-line denomination 20 / ГРИВЕНЬ.
The reverse is bimetallic, with a gold inner circle and a silver outer ring. The inner circle carries an Olbian coin. On the outer ring, above the inner circle, is a thematic ornament, and to the left and right of it stylised scenes of vase painting of the period. Along the upper rim runs the stylised semicircular legend ОЛЬВІЯ.
