21 June is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, and it was this date that India proposed for the International Day of Yoga. The UN General Assembly adopted the resolution on 11 December 2014 with more than 170 co-sponsoring states, and for the first celebration in 2015 India issued this commemorative 10-rupee coin.
The reverse carries the International Day of Yoga logo with the legends «INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA», «अंतर्राष्ट्रीय योग दिवस», the motto «YOGA FOR HARMONY AND PEACE» and «सामंजस्य एवं शान्ति के लिए योग», along with «21 JUNE» and the year 2015. The obverse shows the Lion Capital of Ashoka, the ₹ sign and the value 10.
The first Yoga Day, on 21 June 2015, was held on Rajpath in New Delhi: 35,985 participants took part in the largest yoga class ever held, and representatives of 84 nations set a second Guinness record. The Reserve Bank of India announced the coin’s release into circulation on 30 July 2015.
With its copper-nickel centre and aluminium-bronze ring, this bimetallic 10 rupees suits a sports and wellness theme as well as a collection of India’s mid-2010s commemoratives.
Grade UNC: the coin has not circulated, there is no wear and the mint lustre is intact; only minor marks from storage in bank bags are acceptable.
A coin from the VPcoins range makes a good starting point for a themed selection or a date run.
