The commemorative commemorative coin from cupronickel was made with the quality of proof-like minting, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the assignment of the title “Hero City”, Odessa, its defenders, the people’s militia, the Separate Primorsky Army, the sailors of the Black Sea Fleet who defended in August – October 1941 the city from the Nazi invaders for 73 days and nights during the Great Patriotic War of 1941 - 1945.
The obverse of the coin has a circular frame of a dotted beaded ornament along the perimeter and a gap in the lower part, wh ere a two-line inscription of the coin’s denomination is placed in a semicircle - “200,000 / KARBOVANTSEV” (200,000 / KARBOVANTSIV). The entire middle, outlined by a beaded ornament, is occupied by the image of the small State Emblem of Ukraine, framed on the left and right by viburnum branches with berries. Above the coat of arms is the date of minting of the coin - “1995”. In the space between the outer contour and the circular beaded ornament in the upper part of the obverse there is an inscription in a circle - “NATIONAL BANK OF UKRAINE” (NATIONAL BANK OF UKRAINE). Both inscriptions, the upper and lower ones, are separated by single elements of a diamond-shaped ornament.
The reverse of the coin is occupied by a thematic composition with an image in the foreground in the center of the monument - the obelisk to the Unknown Sailor, which is located in the Central Park of Culture and Leisure named after. T.G. Shevchenko, it was built in honor of the fallen soldiers, sailors and militiamen who heroically defended the city in August - October 1941 from the regular troops of Nazi Germany and its allies. To the left of the obelisk, against the backdrop of sea waves, is a port complex with gantry cranes, a ship, and a pier. On the right side of the obelisk there is an image of the famous Odessa lighthouse, in the middle at the top of the composition there are images of soaring seagulls. The composition is complemented by inscriptions: at the top of the reverse, along the perimeter, in a semicircle, there is an inscription on a mirror background, “THE CITY IS THE HERO OF ODESSA” (MISTO IS THE HERO OF ODESSA) Below the pedestal of the obelisk, in a semicircle, there is an inscription reflecting the years of the Great Patriotic War, “1941 – 1945.”
