A dove with an olive branch against the rising sun: this is how the Royal Australian Mint marked Remembrance Day on the 2014 $2 coin.
The design was created by the Mint itself. Concentric green stripes surround the dove, and the rays of sunlight are inspired by the original Rising Sun badge of the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces. The green rings are printed in colour, and the word REMEMBRANCE appears above the denomination.
Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November: at 11 am on that day in 1918 the guns on the Western Front fell silent. The Mint dedicated commemorative $2 coins to it over several years: a poppy coin in 2012, the dove in 2014 and In Flanders Fields in 2015.
The dove’s mintage was 1.85 million, while 39.9 million standard $2 coins were struck in the same year. The obverse bears Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Elizabeth II.
For a collection it is a link in Australia’s series of commemorative Remembrance Day $2 coins and a coloured circulating coin on a military memorial theme.
The UNC grade means the coin never circulated: there is no wear, the mint lustre and the coloured print are untouched by circulation, and only minor storage marks are acceptable.
At VPcoins we select coins for collectors of every level, from first steps in numismatics to filling the hardest gaps.
