The Perth Mint dedicated its 2013 Anzac Day dollar to military engineers: in the Mint’s records it is listed exactly so — an Anzac Day base metal coin with the Engineers theme, in a card.
Anzac Day is marked on 25 April, the anniversary of the 1915 landing at Gallipoli, the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces in the First World War. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. More than 8,000 Australian soldiers died during the eight-month Gallipoli campaign.
They are remembered at dawn services timed to the original landing, and the National Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial includes the Last Post and a minute’s silence.
The mintage was not capped; according to the Mint, 14,990 coins were sold. The obverse bears Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Elizabeth II. For a military history collection or a First World War theme, this piece honours not the infantry but the engineers.
Condition UNC means the coin has never been in circulation: no wear, full mint lustre, with only minor storage marks possible.
A collection can grow in any direction, and the VPcoins catalogue has options for each of them.
