The interior of the coin depicts the Cathedral of Our Lady of Burgos, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and famous for its enormous size and unique architecture. Construction of the cathedral began in 1221, and within nine years it was being used as a place of worship, although work continued intermittently until 1567. It was built primarily in the French Gothic style, but Renaissance features were added in the 15th and 16th centuries. The name of the issuing country "ESPAÑA" and the year "2012" appear to the left and right above the image. The mint mark (M with crown) appears on the right. The outer ring features the 12 stars of the European Union.
