The five coins of this set show Yemen after the unification of 1990, from the first rials of 1993 to the 20 rials with the dragon tree of Socotra.
The set holds the 1, 5 and 10 rials and two 20 rials coins. The rial bears the national arms, the Eagle of Saladin with the Marib Dam and a coffee plant on its shield; the 5 rials shows the building of the Central Bank of Yemen; the 10 rials, the 17th-century stone bridge of Shaharah over a gorge between two mountain villages.
The highlight is the pair of 20 rials. The value first appeared in 2004 as a bimetallic coin with the legend «شجرة الاخوين», and in 2006 the design moved to a stainless steel coin with the tree’s full Arabic name, «شجرة دم الأخوين», «blood of the two brothers». The tree itself grows only on the Socotra archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.
The 1 and 5 rials were introduced in 1993, the 10 rials in 1995 and struck until 2009, so the set brings together every circulating value the Central Bank of Yemen issued in those years. Uncirculated condition: the coins have never been in circulation, show no wear and keep their mint lustre.
