It is issued by the Central Bank of Honduras: under article 5 of the Monetary Law the bank is the sole issuer of legal-tender coins and banknotes in the country, and the notes and coins it issues have legal force and unlimited paying power. The bank lists this denomination among the notes in current circulation. The paper is one hundred per cent cotton fibre in all denominations; the bank also notes that one issue of the twenty-lempira note was made on a polymer substrate.
The face shows the theme of education: a book and children. The bank writes that fostering education is one of this note's themes, being one of the fundamental pillars of the nation's development. Beside it stands the Government House in Comayagua, where the papers of independence arrived in 1821 — a reminder that two hundred years ago the country began to forge its destiny as an independent nation. The back shows the theme of conservation: the Río Plátano biosphere reserve and the national bird, the scarlet macaw. The bank writes that protecting the country's natural resources is vital to better living conditions.
A note of the lempira, the currency of Honduras, named after the indigenous chief. The most interesting security features are a watermark, which the bank names on the 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 lempiras; silk fibrils scattered over the whole surface of the note, visible in several colours and fluorescent under ultraviolet light. On notes dated 7 April 2022 the fibrils show only under ultraviolet, in red, blue and yellow; and a security thread set vertically into the paper, with clear and microprinted text; it fluoresces only under ultraviolet light. On the 100, 200 and 500 lempiras the thread appears windowed on the face, in silver.
The lempira carries almost the whole history of the country on its notes at once: the chief who resisted the conquest and the presidents who built the republic. For a collection it makes an even run of a single size in which each denomination is known by its colour and its portrait. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
