The reverse of this 1,000 takes you to the San Juan River and the Fortress of the Immaculate Conception. Spanish builders began it on 10 March 1673 and finished in 1675 to bar pirates from sailing upriver to Lake Nicaragua and the city of Granada.
The fortress has a long military record. In 1762 the garrison held out against a British siege, and nineteen-year-old Rafaela Herrera, daughter of the recently deceased commander, entered the story of the defence. In 1780 a British force whose officers included the young captain Horatio Nelson did take the fort, attacking from the hill behind it, yet abandoned it nine months later, in January 1781.
The Central Bank of Nicaragua gave the 1,000 córdobas the theme of national sovereignty, with the Hacienda San Jacinto on the face. With this value the 2015 family grew to seven denominations, from 10 to 1,000 córdobas.
As an uncirculated note it has never been spent and carries no folds or counting marks.
