In 2009 Bank Al-Maghrib marked half a century: Morocco’s central bank was founded in 1959, three years after independence, and for the anniversary it issued a commemorative 50 dirham note. It bears the inscription «50ème anniversaire de Bank Al-Maghrib» and the dates «1959–2009».
The central idea of the front is continuity: side by side are the portraits of the three kings under whom the bank has worked — Mohammed V, Hassan II and Mohammed VI. The back shows the headquarters of Bank Al-Maghrib in Rabat, the celebrant itself.
For a commemorative issue the security is rich: a holographic stripe repeats the portraits of the three monarchs, the crown on the front is printed in colour-shifting ink, and the windows of the security thread change from pink to green when tilted. The watermark shows Mohammed VI and the numeral 50.
Three generations of Moroccan kings on one note and the central bank’s own anniversary make it a key piece in a Morocco collection and in a set of notes issued by central banks for their own anniversaries. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
For those who collect banknotes by subject, whether wildlife, architecture or famous people, the VPcoins catalogue offers other themed issues too.
