The five-tögrög note dated 1981 is a note of the State Bank of the Mongolian People's Republic. The front shows the portrait of Sükhbaatar and the socialist coat of arms; the back carries text and ornament.
The 1966 design had a long life: in 1981–1983 the same notes were printed again with new dates only, and the Banknote Book catalogue treats them as one type (P37 and P44 in Pick).
Damdin Sükhbaatar (1893–1923) founded the Mongolian People's Party and commanded the partisan army in the 1921 revolution; he died at thirty, and in 1924 the capital was renamed Ulaanbaatar, «Red Hero», in his honour.
For a Mongolia collection this fills a place in the socialist series of 1966–1983; it is worth collecting one denomination in both dates, 1966 and 1981–1983: the same design from different eras. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
