The Republic of Serbian Krajina, a self-proclaimed Serb state on the territory of Croatia with its capital at Knin, issued its own money, and this note for fifty million dinars belongs to its hyperinflationary year of 1993. The issuer is the National Bank of the Republic of Serbian Krajina, and the signature is that of its governor Pavao Marjanović.
The whole series shares one design: on the front the coat of arms at left and the numerals of the value in a heart-shaped frame beneath a guilloche, on the back an ornament and the coat of arms again. The front is lettered in Cyrillic, the back in Latin. The values climbed fast: after one million dinars, the 1993 series went on to 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 million, then to 1, 5 and 10 billion.
The money barely outlived its state: in August 1995 Krajina ceased to exist and its dinars lost their validity.
For a collection on inflation in banknotes, Krajina’s 1993 series is a ladder from one million to ten billion dinars, and this note is one of the middle steps of that ladder. VF-AU condition lies between VF and AU: the note has circulated, but the signs are moderate and the paper keeps its body.
The VPcoins catalogue includes both modern polymer issues and banknotes of past eras.
