The 1996 date on this 1,000 shillings is a puzzle from a time without a state: according to the Central Bank of Somalia’s historical overview, the bank ceased to function after the state collapsed in 1991. Yet notes with this date exist and are listed by catalogues as a separate variety, alongside the original 1,000 of 1990.
The front shows women weaving baskets, the back the port and waterfront of Mogadishu. Handicraft and the capital’s harbour — such is the subject of the highest denomination of this series.
A note dated after its issuer had disappeared, it is a telling document of Somalia’s turmoil; next to the 1,000 of 1990 it shows how one design outlived the state that issued it. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
