The 1000 pesos of 1993 is a monument to Amílcar Cabral and to the victory he did not live to see. On the front, beside his portrait, a weaver is at work, while the back carries the allegory «Apoteose ao Triunfo» (Apotheosis of Triumph), celebrating victory in the liberation struggle.
Amílcar Cabral (1924–1973), an agronomist by training, founded the PAIGC, which led Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde towards independence. He was shot dead in January 1973, about eight months before Guinea-Bissau declared its independence.
Cabral’s portrait is repeated in the watermark. This variety is dated 1 March 1993 and signed by Governor Luís Cândido Ribeiro and Vice-Governor José Lima Barber; in 1997 the peso gave way to the CFA franc.
In a Guinea-Bissau collection it is the lowest of the 1993-dated Cabral notes; in a set on leaders of African decolonisation on banknotes it offers an expressive allegory of victory. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
The VPcoins catalogue includes both modern polymer issues and banknotes of past eras.
