The 50 pesos of 1990 honours Pansau Na Isna, a hero of Guinea-Bissau’s war of independence. Born into a Balanta family, he fought in the ranks of the PAIGC, won fame in the battle of Como Island in 1963 and was killed in 1970 during a Portuguese attack on the town of Nhacra.
Beside his portrait on the front is an object of traditional local craft. The date on the note is 1 March 1990, and it was printed by the British firm De La Rue.
The peso was the currency of Guinea-Bissau from 1975 to 1997, when the country switched to the CFA franc.
The lowest denomination of the 1990 series opens it in a Guinea-Bissau collection, and in a topical set on heroes of the anti-colonial struggle it represents one of its field commanders. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
