This rial was issued in 2005 for Oman's 35th National Day, a holiday celebrated on Sultan Qaboos's birthday, 18 November. Thirty-five years separated it from 1970, when Qaboos came to power.
The hero of the back is the Shabab Oman, a barquentine that serves as a training ship of the Royal Navy of Oman. Beside the sailing ship are flamingos, traditional jewellery, a minaret and Al Jalali Fort.
The front carries a portrait of Sultan Qaboos and the state arms with the khanjar and crossed swords; the sultan's portrait is repeated in the watermark. The commemorative rial circulated alongside ordinary notes until in 2024 the Central Bank of Oman put it on the list of issues being withdrawn, exchangeable until the end of the year.
This is a commemorative one-rial note for National Day, later followed by the 2015 rial: in an Oman collection the two form a pair, and in a maritime thematic set the note adds the Omani sailing ship Shabab Oman. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
